Photo Organizing -Pt 2 Backing up your photos.

As I mentioned yesterday, I am devoting this entire week to organizing your photos. Oh and did I mention I am having my FIRST GIVEAWAY on Friday? Okay I did. I'm just so excited...can you tell?
Here's the schedule for the week:

Organizing digital photos from your camera to your computer using some sort of photo software. I will be using iphoto but there are tons of other options available.

Yesterday's post was about organizing your digital photos on your computer. (See that here.) Today I am going to talk about how (and why) to back up all the albums you created on your computer.

First, let's talk about the why. 

Why do you need to back up your photos on your computer?

Computers are great and we depend on them A LOT. But let's face it computers crash--when you least expect it. We have to prepare for it by backing up all of our hard work.  There are multiple ways of doing this including discs, memory sticks, and online sites, such as Mozy and Carbonite. I have to admit, my husband and I have talked about using one of these types of sites over and over again and really just haven't gotten around to it. (Shame on me I know.) But until then, I prefer to keep my photos on discs.


 Because I break my albums by month, it makes it pretty easy to download what I want onto each disc. I can typically get between 3 and 6 months onto a disc depending on how camera happy I was each month. I put the discs into slim colored jewel cases.

I assigned different categories to different colors. For example: The girls are pink and purple (obviously :), Hubs and I are green, Extended family and friends are blue, pets are yellow, and everything else is clear. This makes it very easy to navigate if/when I am ever searching for something specific.
 I currently have them all in a large box with dividers I made out of colored card  stock.  However, I have some catching up to do this past year and when I do I am thinking about getting separate (colored) boxes (like these) for each category as well. 

Another way I have helped a client organize her digital photos saved on discs, was to make an archive binder.
 She had a bunch of CDs from photo shoots that she wanted easy access to. So I found these CD sleeves that I could also place a label beside to not only let you know what is on the CD next to it, but it also lets you know where to put it back.
(I labeled the CD as well). You could also use separate binders for each person/category. I simply used a 2" white binder and just created a label for the front. However, I have also seen some really nice leather-ish looking storage binders that would look very nice displayed as well. See an example here.
 She and her husband also mentioned they like to keep their photos on memory cards as well. I added some photo slide sleeves to the binder with labels for easy storage of those as well if they wished.

Whatever your choice, just remember it is important to 

BACK UP YOUR WORK!

It is also a good idea to consider putting your back up photos in some sort of fire retardant safe or box---just in case. All of this takes some time up front but it is worth the effort.

Today's Daily Tip: Looking at all of this as one giant task is very overwhelming. If you break it down into manageable chunks (say 1-2 hour increments) you can actually get a lot accomplished. And it will feel good. This actually goes for just about any organizing project--something I have to constantly remind myself of. Baby steps. Rome wasn't built in a day. Once you get caught up you can then make plans to keep it up so that it is much less daunting the next go around. Maybe at the end of the month, you upload your photos off of your camera and go ahead and back it up at the same time. Or you have one of those online back-up services do it for you. Whatever works for you.
