Project Playroom: Market

As you may be aware, I have been devoting some time this month to sort of rearranging and reorganizing our basement playroom. And seeing that I used to be an elementary school teacher, the kids' playroom has sort of become like a classroom of sorts. Not sure what I will do when my kids get to old for this kind of stuff. {Sigh}.

The playroom has been ever evolving. You may remember when part of it looked like this (not that long ago). And before I get any comments about a TV in the playroom, I have to say this space has become a great place for family Wii tournaments and movie nights. Just felt like I needed to explain that a bit and I understand that some people may not agree. This works for us though.

Anyway, although this space wasn't bad, it wasn't right either. Besides the fact that it looked a little hodge podge, (the bookshelves were originally from another space) the shelves were way too tall for my kids and just weren't functional for them.

So, keeping with the Ikea theme, I saved up a bit and bought two Expedit shelving units. And I tell you, it must have been meant to be because they fit without an inch to spare. Whew!

I knew this would be a much better solution to house toys and books in a way that the kids could manage more on their own. Love when a plan works the way you "planned" it. (Trust me, that doesn't always happen...ask hubs.)

Well the last couple of days I've been posting about creating a "Cafe" for the kids' play kitchen. (To read about how we made the awning and print off your own kids' menus and ordering sheet go here and here.)

Today I'm showing how I created a little "market" to go with it.

I found these stackable bins at Walmart and thought they would be perfect for storing their play food.

Added a few other cute bins and our market was starting to take shape.

I divided the food up a bit and gave them labels.

Do I really think the food will stay organized? Probably not but I am a big fan of giving everything a place. It's never too early to start teaching that principle to kids either. One day....

I found some market printables at Pre-K Pages and thought they would be the perfect addition. The kids can practice writing words on their grocery lists. Because when you make learning fun, it doesn't feel like work. I'm tricky like that. :)

So now that we had the top bins filled with grocery store goodies, I decided to fill the bottom bins with math-related games such as sorting money, creating patterns and shapes etc.

I added a few more labels and posters and our "Math Market" is officially open for business. I know I'm cheesy. You can take the teacher out of the classroom but not the classroom out of the teacher, right?

And of course we can't forget a place to park our cart! :)

And because I love you all so much I thought I'd include some labels to download. Who doesn't love labels right??

You can download all three of these printables for a small fee in my Etsy shop here.
