The Magic Locket (A Back to School Send-Off)

So my oldest officially started Kindergarten this week. She was a little lot nervous so I wanted to do a little something special before her big day.

I came across the book The Magic Locket by Elizabeth Koda-Callan when looking online one night and I knew it would be perfect. It is basically about a little girl who can't seem to do anything right...until her aunt gives her this magic locket. All of a sudden things start going right. One day it opens and she finds a mirror inside and realizes the magic is within herself.

I thought the message was perfect for my little worrier. The book is supposed to come with a locket but as I found pretty quickly, the book is out of print which means I had to buy it used.
Which means I got a copy of the book without a locket. :(

So I went searching on my own.

I found small heart-shaped lockets at Kohls that were being discontinued and consequently $10 each! So I decided to pick up two and include my little one in on the deal as well. (After all she is going to be going to preschool without big sis this year.)

These lockets did not have mirrors inside so I decided to hot glue tiny pictures of the girls and their dad and me. This way they could wear it to school and always know we were close.

So, last night, (the night before Kindergarten started), after bath, we snuggled up on Tessa's bed and started reading the story. It wasn't overly long and the message was something they could relate to--especially my five year old.

And after the story I gave them their lockets.

And was it ever a hit.
(Please disregard how tired I look. :)

Even Daddy helped them try on their special jewelry.

And I could officially feel "ready" to send my babies off to school.

    1. Thanks Lady. Trust me---it did me too. I think I'm having a harder time with her new chapter than she is. :)

  3. What a great idea! And you don't look tired at all. I like your hair long like that and boy do your girls ever look different with their hair all wet & curly. So precious to see all of you sharing this special moment :) Good luck to all of you in this new chapter in your family!

    1. I love the Kissing Hand. I used to read it to my first graders when I taught and this year my daughter's kindergarten teacher read it. Such a different experience as a parent! Such a great message though. Have a super weekend and thanks so much for stopping by!
